Literary Talks Fall 2024 begin on November 14 at the National Gallery – the Palace with a conversation with Jackie Thomae and Nadezhda Radulova. The moderator will be translator and teacher Violeta Vicheva. Writing and journalism, the place of women in the contemporary world, how we become who we are—these are general themes in the literature of both authors.
German writer and journalist Jackie Thomae is among the most prominent new names in German literature today. Her books One Woman—One Book, Celebrate Your Wrinkles as They Come: The Book for Everyone Getting Older, Moments of Clarity, etc. quickly became bestsellers and garnered her prestigious awards, including the Dusseldorf Literary Prize, the Lessing Prize of the Federal State of Saxony, and more.
Her novel Brothers is her only book translated into Bulgarian (by Iva Ivanova and published by Atlantis). She was shortlisted for the German Literary Prize in 2020. Through the tale of two brothers born on different sides of the Wall, Thomae tells the story of modern German history from the last 30 years.
In October 2024, the writer presented her new book Glück (‘Happiness’) at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Nadezhda Radulova is a poet and writer, a translator from English, and an editor, with a PhD in comparative literature. She graduated in Bulgarian and English philology at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. In 2001, she earned a master’s degree in philosophy at the Central European University in Budapest and the Open University in London. She is the author of six poetry books. Her first book of prose was published in 2023. Yozhi Lives Here attracted a great deal of attention from readers and literary critics. Radulova is also the author of the study Literary Palimpsests: Hilda Doolittle, Jean Rhys, Marina Tsvetaeva. She is currently the editor-in-chief of the online media site Toest. She has won of the Ivan Nikolov and Nikolay Kanchev awards for poetry, as well as the literary translation award of the Union of Bulgarian Translators and the Krastan Dyankov award for translation from English. Radulova’s poems and short stories have been translated into more than ten European languages.
